Wildlife

Mysore is a perfect getaway place to soak in the beauty of the Indian jungles at Bandipur and Nagarahole – two major Project Tiger National Parks of India – are just 80 km from here. While sighting a tiger or a leopard is a matter of chance, elephants can be seen in plenty. Especially at the backwaters of the Kabini and the best time to spot elephants in hundreds, is during summer before the South West monsoon sets in. The two national parks are also India’s best bet for tiger conservation, have a rich density of the three major carnivore species of India – tigers, leopards, dholes or Indian wild dogs – have the same density which indicates an abundance of prey animals.

So the chances of sightings are good. Both Bandipur and Nagarahole have a combined forest area of nearly 1500 sq km and are contagious to Mudumalai in Tamil Nadu, Wynad in Kerala and a vast landscape that constitutes the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve (combined areas over 6000 sq km) Incidentally, this region also harbours the highest density of elephants anywhere in Asia and supports not less than 10,000 of these majestic creatures.
